Moly-D ‘U’ Shaped Element

The Moly-D element is a dense cermet material consisting of MoSi₂ and an oxide glassy phase component. It withstands high-temperature oxidation by forming a self-healing protective quartz layer on its surface, reaching operating thresholds up to 1850°C.

Unique Operational Properties

Capable of dissipating high power loading with rapid furnace temperature ramping. Can be operated continuously or intermittently. Old and new elements can be used together and connected in series due to constant resistance stability.

FOUR-SHANK HORIZONTAL ELEMENTS

Four-shank elements in 6/12, 9/18, and 12/24 diameters are engineered specifically for furnaces with low chamber heights where elements must be mounted horizontally without sagging.

Physical Characteristics

Moly-D heating elements are manufactured by powder metallurgy. They consist of molybdenum disilicide with additives that prevent recrystallization. Completely stable up to 1800ºC (3270°F), it surpasses other heating element types for high-temperature performance.

Self-Healing Quartz Layer: The oxidation resistance lies in forming an impermeable quartz or glass-like layer. If exposed to contaminants, a lower melting phase forms and drips off, exposing fresh MoSi₂ which generates a new protective oxide barrier.

Electrical Stability: Low specific electrical resistivity with a positive resistance-temperature characteristic. Electrical resistance remains constant over its useful life, permitting mixed use of old and new elements in series.

Temperature Range & Atmosphere Guidelines

Nominal Operation: Operates between 1300°C and 1750°C (2372–3182°F). Maximum surface temperature in air is 1800°C (3270°F).

Low Temperature & Harsh Gas Use: May be used below 1300°C (2372°F) in atmospheres harmful to silicon carbide elements (e.g., sulfur dioxide, water-steam). Ductile behavior begins at approximately 1200°C (2190°F).

CRITICAL TEMPERATURE WARNING ("PEST"): Moly-D should NOT be used between 400°C and 700°C (752–1292°F), where a destructive low-temperature oxidation called "pest" may occur.
